About Piano Traders

Piano Traders Ltd is a family owned business with almost 60 years operating as a retail store. We pride ourselves on our product knowledge and excellent customer service - with our team having nearly 100 years of combined experience!

Founded in 1953 by Russell and Clarice Hancox, the store began its life in Dominion Road, Auckland, before moving to its current location in 1962. In 1969 Rod Hancox started working in the store as an apprentice piano tuner/technician. He took over the reins of the family business in 1976 and is still at the helm of a successful business today. In 1970, a comprehensive print music section was begun and developed from then until it became a significant element of the business.

Today, our store employs a cheerful bunch of committed full-timers (all musicians) as well as providing opportunities for university students to work part time while studying. From the front counter, to the office, to the mailroom, it’s a great place to work, which translates into an awesome place to shop.

At Piano Traders we focus on three main areas:

As our name Piano Traders Ltd suggests, pianos are a big part of what we offer and this includes brand new and pre-loved acoustic instruments, both grands and uprights, as well as the hugely popular digital piano models where a beginner can learn on an instrument without the larger outlay of funds but still experience the sound and touch of a real instrument. Our range of keyboards from home models to professional workstations/synthesisers will impress those looking to fill different needs.

Our Print Music Shop division both imports and retails a huge range of print music from all the major publishers around the world. We are proud of the simply massive amount of stock we carry and equally proud of our commitment to sourcing the more difficult titles from overseas for you. In addition to the print music available in our Auckland store, we have set up comprehensive print music displays in two independent music stores, in New Plymouth and Dunedin, which are expertly managed by the owners of those stores. Over the last few years we have expanded into the prestigious Martin guitar range, setting up the Martin Guitar Shop within our Mt Eden store. We carry a wide range of these guitars and have ready access to many more models literally up the road at Martin’s NZ importer. We have also started the beginner range of Wizard string instruments, imported directly from the manufacturer. You can add to that our comprehensive range of instrument accessories including music stands, metronomes, tuners, strings, music novelties and various instruments such as ukuleles and harmonicas.

We are an active supporter of the music scene in particular with secondary schools and performing arts competitions around the country. We also support music teachers by either co-hosting teaching workshops with overseas speakers or by providing comprehensive print music displays at various large teacher conferences such as those organized by IRMT and NEWZATS. Although the overheads of being at these events are significant, we believe in doing our part to assist music teachers in any way we can. For this same reason we offer a discount scheme as an incentive for teachers and schools to buy their everyday music requirements through us.

Our website is constantly growing and changing with new product added weekly so put us in your ‘favourites’ and pop back every now and then.
